"My son was just a few weeks old and struggling to feed from both breast and bottle when we were referred to Dr. Krizman for assessment of his lip and tongue ties. His pediatrician had clipped both with scissors when he was one week (lip) and two weeks (tongue) old. I was never given post-procedure instructions and as a result both places reattached. Dr. Krizman saw us less than 24 hours after I made the initial phone call. I can't emphasize enough how knowledgeable, gentle, and caring she is! I was very much at ease with her and her staff - I was very nervous to bring in my baby after the two unsuccessful procedures. She used the laser to release both tongue and lip ties in a very quick procedure. He healed so quickly and with the help of the arnica she prescribed, I believe he was relatively comfortable. Dr. Krizman gave extensive follow up instructions - unlike our (former) pediatrician. Our experience was amazing and I am so thankful to Dr. Krizman! "

"I had tried to breastfeed all of my babies but was never able get past a few weeks due to the pain. When I had my 4th baby I was determined to breast feed him. At 3 weeks old we found out he had a posterior tongue and lip tie. Dr. Krizman was fantastic! She took so much time with us and explained the procedure and after care so well! She is a mom who breastfed her babies and really empathized with my desire to keep nursing my son. I am happy to report he is 5 months old now and we are still breastfeeding! Such a wonderful feeling. Thanks Dr. Krizman!"

"Dr. Krizman and everyone in her office are amazing. We delivered a baby boy in May and quickly realized that we had an uphill battle to establish breastfeeding because of his tongue and lip-tie. Dr. Krizman came highly recommended by the TMC Lactation Consultants. When we called for an appointment her staff got us in right away, recognizing that every day in the beginning of a baby's life when breastfeeding is not going well feels like forever for the mother and father of the little one. Dr. Krizman is a mother herself and completely gets the big picture of why breastfeeding is so important for babies' health and the mother-baby bonding experience. She released our son's tongue and lip tie, and then when they reattached she re-did the procedure free of charge (as part of the initial package). The second time was the charm and we have been thriving since. We would not be where we are today, holding our chubby, happy, beautiful, exclusive ly-breastfed three-month old son without Dr. Krizman and her fabulous staff! We have now recommended her to two of our dear friends and they too have had fabulous experiences. Thank you, thank you, thank you !"

"My little baby boy was severely lip & tongue-tied from birth. It affected breastfeeding from the start. Though he latched he had to work extra hard to nurse. After 1 week, my nipples were open because of the hard suck and the force from that split them. It took 2 weeks to heal completely from that. Literally, immediately after the release, he nursed and it was pain free! OMG! Awesome. We did the tongue massages were done every 4 hours for 4 weeks.

He must be a fast healing, and it is unusual for a release to reconnect, it happened to us. I called Dr. Krizman when he was 2 months old because I felt the latch 'tightening' and he needed a re-released of his tongue. For the second release she did so without charge. He didn't tolerate the release as well as he did in his 1st week of life, and we had to syringe feed because he never had taken a bottle and he didn't want to use his tongue, that night and he was fussy, but it did make a big difference. I was consistent with the massages again and he re-connect a little bit but nothing that affected our breastfeeding relationship!

The only recommendations I have for other clients is get a 'pre-approval' from your insurance so you can submit the insurance voucher Dr. Krizman's gives her clients. totally worth it and I don't have time to drive to PHX to see Dr Agarwal and gladly footed the bill.

Thank You Dr. Krizman! We will be back for Dental work for ourselves!"

"We found out that our daughter hds both lip and tongue ties when she was about 6 weeks old. We are living in Albuquerque, NM at the time and no one here was able to release her ties with a laser. I called Krizmen Dental on a Monday and they wanted to get us in the very next day since Dr Krizman was going out of town on Wednesday. Since we lives 7 hours away, this wasn't possible for us. But Dr. Krizman was willing to see us before she left for vacation on Wednesday morning! We got there and were greeted with the kindest staff. Jeanne evaluated our daughter and confirmed the ties. She explained how the procedure worked and the after care. Knowing that we were getting on the road to come back home right after, she gave us a small supply of coconut oil and a sample of Arnica. She even sent me a text to see how things were healing while she was on vacation!! She is an amazing Dr., and I can't wait to see her when we move to AZ next year!"

"We brought my son to Dr. Krizman when he was about 2-3 months old when a Lactation consultant thought his poor latch and poor weight gain might be attributed to a tongue tie. He had a severe tongue and lip tie that had to be released in 4 places. Before his frenectomy, he was unable to latch without getting tons of air and discomfort for him and I during feedings. He also could not latch onto the bottle. Dr. Krizman was awesome!!! She uses a laser which causes minimal bleeding. She showed me his severe tongue and lip tie before surgery. After surgery, I noticed a huge difference with his first feeding! He could finally get a deep latch! He also could finally latch on to the bottle. Dr. Krizman gives you coconut oil to help with the tongue and lip stretches and some homeopathic drops for pain. The surgery was not a huge deal, my son had discomfort from it for the first day but was fine after. The hardest part about it all was the stretches that we had to do afterwards. After his tongue tie release, I immediately could see that he had far more mobility with his tongue and could touch the roof of his mouth with it. Something he definitely could not do before. I HIGHLY recommend Dr.Krizman. Her office is very clean, staff is very knowledgable and kind."

Dr. Krizman has advanced training in laser use. She perfected her treatment on infants by studying with doctors such as Dr. Ghaheri in Portland Oregon, who specializes in infant frenectomy release. She is an active member of the International Affiliation of Tongue Tie Professionals Association and attended the most recent 4 day conference in Colorado.

Diagnosis

After reviewing mom’s and baby’s symptoms associated with breast feeding, Dr. Krizman will evaluate your child for tongue function and appearance. Parents are included in the evaluation, and shown where their child may have a tongue or lip tie. If a frenectomy is indicated, the procedure happens during the same visit, so your family won't need to make an additional trip.

Laser Frenectomy Procedure

The frenectomy procedure takes only 5-10 minutes.

Prior to the frenectomy procedure, we administer a homeopathic Tongue Tie Remedy that will aid with healing. All babies receive a specially formulated anesthetic gel to minimize discomfort. No sedation or general anesthesia is needed. Your child is safely swaddled and laser protection goggles are placed over the eyes. One of our dental assistants will gently stabilize your baby’s head for the procedure. For laser safety recommendations, parents are not allowed in the treatment room.

The procedure typically takes less than 5 minutes. The laser tip is used to precisely remove the restrictive tissue under the tongue. Lip ties are treated and released at the same visit with no additional charge.

There is little to no bleeding during the procedure, because the laser seals blood vessels. The laser also seals nerve endings, so there is a numbing effect for a several hours following the visit. Since the laser disinfects, risk of infection is minimized.

As soon as Dr. Krizman releases the ties, the swaddle and eye protection are removed and you are reunited with your child. Breastfeeding is possible immediately after the procedure. You may do so in our private room.

Parents receive the homeopathic Tongue Tie Remedy to administer to their child to help with healing. They are also given a small jar or Organic Coconut Oil to use as a lubricant during the stretching exercises. Coconut oil is a natural anti-bacterial agent as well, and will decrease the risk for infection.

Your baby will be seen for a complimentary, 1 week post op visit to check for tongue and/or lip reattachment, and confirm that stretches are being completed properly.

Recovery

Your child may be fussy for a few days following the procedure. Some show immediate improvement with breastfeeding following the procedure, while other babies may need some time to learn how to use their newly released tongue. Dr. Krizman strongly recommends making an appointment with a lactation consultant within days after the release to help get your changing breastfeeding relationship off to a good start.

Since the bottom of the tongue and floor of the mouth frequently touch, the site will occasionally reattach. To prevent reattachment, Dr. Krizman recommends a specific aftercare regimen. Any reattachment requiring laser revision at a later date is performed at no additional charge.

Paying For Care

We keep payment as simple as possible. This means one all-inclusive fee that includes any and all frenectomy related care. This fee is due at the appointment. Payment plans are available as needed.

We provide a statement with medical coding for you to submit directly to your medical insurance company. Many insurance companies cover all or part of the cost of the procedure. The insurance company reimburses you directly based on your coverage.

We want to make this process as easy as possible to access care.

What is a Frenectomy / Frenotomy?

Frenotomy is a procedure used to correct a congenital condition when the lingual (tongue) or labial (lip) frenulum is tight resulting in restriction of function. This may potentially result in difficulty of breastfeeding and other concerns such as dental, digestive and speech issues. If your lactation consultant or doctor feels that this procedure is warranted, then the following is what you can expect.

LIP TIE

Frenectomy Tucson AZ - LIP TIE A tight upper lip frenum attachment may compromise full lip flanging and appear as a tight, tense upper lip during nursing. This can result in a shallow latch during breastfeeding. Additionally, the tight upper lip may trap milk, resulting in constant contact of the milk to the front teeth. This can result in decalcification and dental decay can develop when the milk is not cleaned off of these areas. This same issue can occur with bottle-feeding. If the frenum attaches close to the ridge or into the palate a future diastema (gap between the teeth) can also occur.

TONGUE TIE

Frenectomy Tucson AZ - TONGUE TIE A tight lower tongue frenum attachment may restrict the mobility of the tongue and appear as a cupping or heart shaped tongue when the tongue is elevated. This can result in an inability to get the tongue under the nipple to create a suction to draw out milk. Long term a tongue tie can result in speech problems and/or issues later with transferring food around the mouth for chewing. Approximately 3-5% of the population presents with this condition.

SYMPTOMS

Some babies can have ties and not be symptomatic. To know if the ties are a problem we ask two major questions: "Is the baby getting enough to eat?" and "Is nursing comfortable for the mother?"
Symptoms can be as follows:

Baby’s Symtpoms
  • Poor latch
  • Attempting to latch
  • Colic symptoms
  • Reflux symptoms
  • Poor weight gain
  • Continuous feedings
  • Gumming or chewing of the nipple
  • Unable to take a pacifier or bottle
Mom’s Symptoms
  • Creased, cracked, bruised, or Slides off nipple or falls asleep while blistered nipples
  • Bleeding nipples
  • Incomplete breast drainage
  • Infected nipples or breasts
  • Plugged ducts
  • Mastitis
  • Nipple thrush

About the Procedure

The procedure is tolerated very well by babies and we try to ensure that discomfort is minimized. A topical numbing gel is placed on the frenulum for frenotomies (an incision of the frenulum attachment) and a very small amount of local anesthetic may be injected for frenectomies (frenulum tissue removal) for infants over 12 months of age.

It is common for babies to cry and/ or act fussy during and after the procedure. Babies typically loose only a small amount of blood, if any at all when a laser is used. You may notice a very dark stool if your baby swallowed any blood and this is normal. Your baby may even experience oozing of blood or brown spit ups or stools after the procedure if he or she swallows blood after the procedure. Once baby is numb, they are treated in our laser treatment room and immediately returned to you. Please feel free to nurse, bottle-feed and/ or cuddle your baby, depending on your preference. Note that it is common for babies to drool after the procedure until the numbing dissipates.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

The complication after the procedure is that due to the rapid healing capability of the mouth, and the healing site may want to reattach. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you follow the guidelines listed on stretching exercises for your baby. Failure to stretch with the pressure and frequency that Dr. Krizman demonstrates may lead to reattachment at either the tongue site or the lip site, causing a new limitation in mobility and the persistence or return of symptoms.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS

The alternative to laser treatment includes scalpel surgery using local anesthesia and/or sedation. The other alternative is to do no treatment. No treatment could result in some or all of the conditions listed under “Symptoms” above. Advantages (benefits) of laser vs. scalpel or scissors include lower probability of re-healing, less bleeding, no sutures (stitches) or having to remove sutures.
